Good July

July relevant info:

Run ks: 176 (5th biggest ever)
This includes:
3.5k barefoot (on grass) &
A 19k long run at about 6:00 pace.

Barefoot walking on concrete:
50 mins.

Riding:
66 ks (rode to work & back home on the same day).

Good month. The monthly running ks have continued the gradual rise since Jan.

I've entered the Melb half marathon again. This will be my 3rd in a row.

I took about 36 hours to recover from the 19k run on July 26 and about the same time to recover from the ride to work & back on July 29.

I tried a couple of new things on the 2hr 12min long run that I did early last Sunday (Aug 2nd). I was trying to prevent DOMS. The things I did differently were:
- I stopped at a bubbler at presidents park Werribee a couple of times to drink,
- After 1hr 55min of running I ate my stash of half a handful of sultanas,
- ran on a good mixture of bike path, grass and undulating river bank

I ran on an empty stomach (as usual for a lr). As soon as I got back I got some porridge into me, drank some salvital and took some glucosimine. During the shower I sprayed coooold water on my knees & calves and for the rest of the day I wore my cheap, cheap slazenger brand 'compression' tights. The end result of all the above (plus other variables that I'm not aware of) is that I had no DOMS after this run & didn't even feel all that tired during the day. So, I'll keep doing this type of stuff after long runs & rides.

The ride to work & back went well, though the legs were really quite 'gone' during the last 5ks. I hope to do it again tomorrow and weekly on-going.

I've found that the barefoot running on the grassy baseball field at presidents park, while very pleasant, does not toughen up the skin hence the bit of barefoot walking on concrete. I've no long term plan with the b/f. Short/medium term goal is to toughen up the skin to run about 4k per week b/f on (pretty much) any surface.

I've ordered a pair of Loco Perfectos (shoes). I've had 2 pairs of Loco Xpressos which I reckon are great for me. Unfortunately my size is no longer available in Xpressos so I'm giving the Perfectos a go. All my other shoes are due for recycling so as long as I take to the Perfectos I'll be wearing them on Oct 11 (half marathon day).
