Running totals:
Dec 08: 3km
Jan 09: 51km
Feb 09: 71km
I'm finding that if I run for more than about 30 min I need to ice my r shin afterwards to stave off a shin pain flare-up. So, yes unfortunately I still can't run with impunity. This is a bit of a shame because my motivation to run longer distances has generally been quite high of late. I've found that my stamina is much improved on the last few runs thanks to getting back to 20km per week. My lungs & heart & head & most of my legs are saying come on lets go out for a nice gentle 90-100 min run. My friggin' r shin is holding me back.
I've done some 3 hour walks in prep for an event called 'go the extra mile' on Sun 02 May. This is a 50km walk ending in the Dandenongs. It's a fund raiser to benefit the downtrodden Dalit children in India.
Last weekend I rode my bike about 67km. All the way from home to Docklands & back. Man, I was stuffed during the final 5km but I somehow managed to get home. I've worked out the logistics for riding in, getting the train home, getting the train in the next day & riding home. Complex but probably do-able. I just need to put the bike in for some servicing & I'll finally be ready to do some cycle commuting to work (just in time for the cold weather).
Well a lots been happening in my personal life, but that's not what this blog's about. I'm still married, still have 2 kids, a roof, a job & we're all healthy, so it hasn't been any of the biggest ticket items. Lots of other stuff going on, some of which is threatening some of the big ticket items. Most of it is of my own making or in my scope of control, so it's up to me.
The Church did some concerts in Vic on the weekend. I saw em on Sat night at the East Brunswick club. I have been sooo looking forward to this event for 6 weeks. Maybe my expectations were a little high but I came away a bit disappointed in the show. My main beef was the loudness and muddiness of the sound. I haven't been to concerts for years so I'm well out of touch, but this gig was just too loud. You know when the bass drum hits you on the chest like a medicine ball that something's up. The drums & bass and vocals were all too meshed up. Steve Kilbey seemed to be yelling more than singing and sometimes seemed to be not following the melody of the song, just belting it out. A couple of times I looked at him & thought yep it's Steve Kilbey, but the singing's like a Church cover band (Yikes). I've noticed in his blog that he did confess to drinking too much on Sat night. Damn demon drink (I've barely touched alcohol in the past 4 months). The beautiful subtlety of their music didn't come across to me on Sat night. Obviously it's very shallow to be put off by the appearance of people, but The Church's guitarists M W-P and PK are not pleasing to my eye. Yikes, sorry again. I'll just continue to enjoy listening. On a positive note it was good to finally largely work out who does what in their partnership. And I'm afraid TP their drummer just doesn't do it for me at all. He just doesn't seem to have any chops or speed. Reminds me of a caveman using clubs.
Having said all that I was able to purchase a pre-release edition of their new album titled 'untitled #23' and I am very happy with this. In the studio, Steve Kilbey's voice is varied and full of spark. Only up to my 3rd listen, so it's still settling in. About 7 of the 10 songs are dreamy, soaring, melodic beauties, each with enough left turns to stop them being predictable pop. The other tracks rock out quite a bit more and are excellent. Early favourite is 'Anchorage' with about 8 others on its tail.
I also picked up their two new EPs. One called Coffee Hounds has a cover of kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love'. It's a faithful, excellent version. SK's vocals are great. All in all, the Church in 2009 are in fine, fine fettle and deserve to be re-discovered by y'all.
I was also very impressed with the support act on Sat night called 'astreetlightsong'. 3 young lads from Sydney who reminded me at times of Killing Joke and The Killers. ie sort of 80's post punk. God they looked young, good musos. They too were way too loud.
