Tilt

Watched this doco on abc2 on Sunday night called 'Scott Walker: 30 century man' about the career of this former member of the Walker Brothers (who were neither brothers, nor Walkers). The WBs were huge for a while in the mid 60s, especially in England. Remember the song with the chorus 'the sun aint gonna shine any more, the moon aint gonna rise in the sky.....' that was a big WBs hit with Scott's big deep voice on lead vocals. They did mega-ballads with Phil Spectre-like production.

Anyway the young and gorgeous Scott had trouble dealing with his beatles-like fame and couldn't perform on stage any more. The band split and Scott rapidly put out 4 solo albums in the late 60s titled Scott, Scott2, Scott3 & Scott4. The first 3 did well on the English charts but S4 bombed. The WBs re-formed for a while in the mid 70s and had a hit with 'no regrets' again with Scott's big voice on vocs:

there's no regrets
no tears goodbye
i don't want you back
we'd only cryyyyyyy again
say goodbyyyyyyyye again.....

Powerful lyrics when you think about them.

I first read about Scott's solo career about 5 years ago on a music forum. Mostly it was impassioned ravings about how brilliant his albums are. I've always had him in the back of my mind as someone to explore so I was very interested to watch the doco.

He's been reclusive since the '70s and only released one album in each of the '80s, 90s (called tilt) & 00s (the drift).

I'm now contemplating whether I should delve into this guy. My reservations come from the descriptions of tilt & the drift that I've read & the short snippets I heard on the doco. From what I've read, starting with Scott3 & 4 would be a good way to go. Apparently they are very different to anything that was around at the time. Full of strings, wonderful singing and emotional impact, but with some very, very dark themes going on.

Some music has the ability to elicit strong emotional responses in me. It's good when it happens. The release. I know what will happen if i get Scott3 & 4. I'll fall madly in love with them and want to get 'tilt' and 'the drift'. Trouble is, apparently these are utterly terrifying albums which you will likely hate, love and become addicted to. You will be compelled to listen in a darkened room and come out completely disturbed. Apparently there's not a melody, verse or chorus to be found on the drift. Discordant strings. Quiet moments shattered by pure horror. And he does something with his voice that people can't describe. Like staring into the abyss (whatever that is). A journey into his vision of hell. I've got young kids. It would be wrong to have CDs like this in my house.
