Tapering in the time of yellow wee

Ahhh yes I’m in the middle of my 2nd ever taper as I prepare for my 2nd ever half marathon on this Sunday.

September stats:
18 runs
168.3 kms (5 of those barefoot)
Pace: ranging from low to high 5s (min/k)
Longest run: 22.4 km (133 min on feet) which is in fact my longest ever run.
Resting HR:47
Weight: 85kg. I really am miffed about this recent unintended weight gain.

Running highlight:
Hmmm pretty mundane month really.

Lowlight:
September was windy. Running in the wind ain’t much chop.
Since mid Sept my R calf has been a bit sore and my R shin a bit splinty.

Things I saw:
Right at the start of the 22.4km long run while I was plodding at 6:00 pace a young lady flew past me at about 4:30 pace. It’s quite a surprise seeing another runner about at 6:30 on a Sat morn Werribee, let alone a fast young lady. I said ‘morning’ but she had music on & probably didn’t hear me. I saw her again several ks later as she was returning from her loop still with good form and pace. Good to know there’s a strong young runner in the neighbourhood.

Also on this run I saw a group of women exercising under the watchful eye and instruction of their bossy female personal trainer. I see them each time I run early on a Saturday. One woman, about size 18, had a rope tied around her waist and on the other end of the rope was a car tyre. She was scrambling up the steep bank of the Werribee river, dragging the tyre. Surely that’s working her too hard! It has to be an injury or de-motivation waiting to happen. I really can’t understand how someone is motivated to get up a 6am on a Sat, drive to a park (I see their cars parked) only to be ordered to do short sharp exercises to the point of exhaustion. Why would you choose to do that over a free run/brisk walk or bike ride or whatever?

Shin pain
Apart from prodding several times with my thumb to find the spot, rubbing some voltaren on it a couple of times and some extra stretching I’ve been ignoring it. This morning I took some voltaren tabs to see how that makes it feel. I might take some more on Sunday morning as I really don’t want to run in pain. This may need some attention and recovery time after Sunday.

No pace-maker required
Had a routine check of my BP the other day. 3 readings were all good. The machine also measured pulse which was 47. The woman asked ‘do you work on getting your pulse low?’. I told her I run & she said ‘It shows and just as well you do because otherwise you’d need a pace-maker.’

Taper stuff
Despite drinking heaps of water my wee is bright yellow as I’ve taken a few Italian effervescent multi-vitamins (Beroccas) in recent days in an 11th hour attempt to be at my best on Sunday.

Also been eating extra fruit & veg (OK, and chocolate and lollies) for a couple of weeks.

I’ll be trying to get to bed by 10:00 for the next 3 nights and a sleep-in on Sat would be lurrrrrrrrrverly.

I mustn’t forget to attach the timing thingy to my shoe & get the bike ready for riding as I’ll park in Sth Melb & ride the rest of the way to the start.

Race plan:
Pretty simple. Start with the 1:50 pacer and if all going well at the 15k mark try to track down, and ideally pass the 1:45 bus.

Lyrics:
Currently loving Steve Kilbey's work on The Church's Priest=Aura album. So many mind bending gems. eg:
'Everybody hates the bastards in power
But their pill is sugar coated'

Many of his songs are stories with a perfect blend of intrigue, humour, terror, anger and bleakness. And I love his voice and his bass playing. I love Steve Kilbey!
