Barefoot in the park

I’ve finally done some barefoot running and it feels great. A couple of weeks ago I checked out a footy oval at Galvin Park, Werribee which is a 12 min gentle run from home. It’s obviously one of the ovals that has a permit to water it as the grass is in very good condition. On my first visit there I did just 2 laps barefoot (~1k) and last weekend I did 5 laps barefoot.

When I run in shoes my feet often take about 20min to settle in. By that I mean slight crampy niggles in the arch & general slight discomfort. I had that feeling during the 12 min run to the park but as soon as I started barefoot my feet felt really great. Feeling the grass & sinking slightly into the softer bits is lovely.

Also had a couple of teenage girls giving me ‘encouragement’ when I went past them at each lap. I got my first ‘run forest run’ (& I’ve never even seen that movie). Other comments included ‘come on’, ‘faster’, ‘……..olympics’, ‘get some shoes!’ They must have been pretty bored to be hanging around a footy ground on non-match day so I was happy to provide them with some entertainment.

There’s a good chance I’ll be back there regularly to do more barefoot stuff.

Another highlight run was a 130 min epic in the evening of Saturday 23/08. I started at 8:40pm & got home around 11. An interesting way to spend a Sat night. All up, I’d say it was probably a better option than watching the Audrey Hepburn movie on ABC2.

Another running related highlight was getting some excel formula help from the legendary ‘The Rev Dodgson’ from the ABC Tech Talk forum. He gave me a formula using the sumproduct function which automatically calculates weekly running totals ‘on the fly’. I adapted the formula to calc monthly totals on the fly too. So now when I enter the details of a run, the spreadsheet automatically updates the current weekly & mthly total! So pleasing!

So monthly total for August curtesy of my spreadsheet is:

Kms: 171

Other stats:

Weight 84kg – Oh man, I’m training & gaining. WTFIGO?

Waist: 89cm I’m gonna keep a closer eye on that now, instead of weight. I’d like a low 80s number.

Shoes:
It really is time to retire (& probably dispose of) 3 pairs that have done 800 - >1,000k.

Six weeks ago I got a pair of brooks adrenalines which I ordered online from running warehouse (which cost me only AU$110). My first time in brooks & they seem fine though maybe half a size too big.

The other day, my second pair to Loco Xpressos arrived in the mail. I’ve done at least 1,000k in the first pair plus plenty of walking too. Loco are phasing out the Xpresso model so they are currently on sale for only $80 (postage included). I recommend these shoes, they are light and have a bit of stability for the over-pronators. Like all Locos they are not at all fashionable to look at. Me no care. Likely to be wearing the Locos on the day of the Melb half…..

Speaking of which, I must get out for another 120 min + run this weekend.
