Running on (lactic) acid
I ran in the Bolte Bolt last week. This is a fortnightly run from Docklands Park to underneath the Bolte Bridge and return. It’s approx 4.4 - 4.5k. I started out with the group who were aiming for an 18 – 20 min run (it’s a roughly handicapped event). There were 5 of us in the group. I ran in last place for the first 1.5k, just running at a controlled pace and not letting them get too far away. I got the feeling that most, if not all of them were doing it pretty hard and would die in the arse in the second half. Sure enough by half way I’d passed a couple and passed the other two with about 1k to go. I nearly gave it my all over the last km (held a little back). I finished in a time of 18:33 which is just over 4 min/km pace. Pretty happy with that considering the first 1.5k was probably about 5 min / km pace.
It’s been ages since I had that feeling of lactic acid in the system!
As an indication of how I still had something left to give at the end, I was able to walk along (in lieu of collapsing) while I counted my pulse for 15 seconds. 39 beats in 15 secs equates to a heart rate of ~ 156. Various generic formulae suggest that the max HR for a 42yo is in the mid-high 170s. There is mounting evidence that my Max HR is quite a bit lower than that (granted, counting pulse for 15 sec is a pretty crude method but the highest I’ve measured it has been high 150s). I’m not drawing any great conclusions from this, but it’s interesting to know.
The Sri Chinmoy Como Landing run on Sun 6 July is another in a string of runs that I’ve considered doing but failed to get to. We had some family arriving at 1pm for lunch and with all the mucky muck to be accomplished beforehand it just wasn’t worth trying to fit in a trip to the city for a 14km run.
This Sunday there’s a 10k run along the Maribyrnong River that I won’t be able to do because were visiting my parents which requires separate visits to Fern Tree Gully and Canterbury.
I’m now thinking of doing either the Coburg half marathon on 27 July or the Bellarine Rail trail run from Geelong to Queenscliffe (34k) on 03 Aug.
Whilst I haven’t done many runs over 15k in recent months, my monthly average has been around 150k over the last 12 months which I think is enough base to enter a half marathon. Also I did do a 20k run a couple of weeks ago. 34k is certainly a huge run for me (my longest ever run is about 22k). My positive side says that if I ‘Gallowalk’ the first part (ie alternate running for ~9mins with walking for 1 min for the first 90 mins) I could finish in pretty good shape. Another plus for the Bellarine is it’s mostly soft trail whereas the Coburg HM is concrete bike path. Hmmmm I think I’m talking myself into Bellarine.
Stats for June are:
Time: 15hrs:55mins
Ks: ~175
No injuries or other dramas.
